About Thailand & Vietnam Service and Adventure Program
This 26-day summer program takes you on a transformative journey through Thailand and Vietnam, where you'll make a real difference while exploring two of Southeast Asia's most captivating countries. You'll spend the first half in Thailand working on meaningful community service projects alongside local students, then transition to Vietnam for additional service work in remote villages, all while experiencing world-class natural attractions and authentic cultural immersion.
In Chiang Mai, Thailand, you'll become part of the "Food For Thought" initiative at a local school in need. Working alongside Thai students, you'll build a sustainable Mushroom House, plant fruit trees, and develop a lasting food system that provides students with both nutrition and income. This isn't theoretical learning—you'll get your hands dirty with real construction projects while forming genuine cross-cultural friendships. You'll also participate in a Lanna Cultural Challenge where you'll learn traditional crafts including pottery, cooking, and dance directly from local experts. The itinerary includes a Market Cooking Challenge where you'll source fresh ingredients and prepare authentic Thai dishes for your fellow travelers, giving you practical culinary skills alongside cultural understanding.
Adventure and wildlife experiences punctuate your service work. You'll hike to the summit of Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, enjoying stunning views and a bonfire under the stars. At an ethically-vetted elephant sanctuary, you'll learn about elephant conservation while working alongside mahouts (handlers) to care for these magnificent creatures—TFT explicitly does not support elephant riding and partners only with sanctuaries meeting strict ethical standards. Island hopping takes you to Koh Phi Phi and Krabi, where you'll snorkel among coral reefs, relax on pristine beaches, visit limestone cave temples, and explore emerald pools. In Bangkok, you'll experience the organized chaos of Southeast Asia's capital, visiting the opulent Royal Palace, sacred temples, and indulging in world-class street food.
The second half transitions to Vietnam, beginning with a homestay in the remote mountain village of Mai Chau. Here you'll stay directly with a Vietnamese family (in gender-specific rooms), experiencing traditional Vietnamese life while working on community service projects that genuinely improve families' quality of life—renovating kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces in a community facing extreme poverty. You'll meet the families you're helping and witness firsthand the impact of your work. From there, you'll explore Hanoi's ancient streets and French-colonial architecture, take a scenic boat ride down the Trang An River in Ninh Binh with its dramatic limestone cliffs, and experience the legendary Ha Long Bay on an overnight cruise through one of the world's natural wonders.
Throughout the program, you'll stay in carefully selected, locally-run accommodations rather than impersonal chain hotels—from a nonprofit with communal facilities near Chiang Mai to beachfront resorts on the islands to a peaceful bamboo hut on the river. All meals are included and feature authentic local cuisine tailored to any dietary restrictions. You'll earn up to 40 hours of documented community service volunteering, develop genuine friendships across cultures, and return home with unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of global communities. This program is ideal for high school students (grades 9-12) seeking to combine adventure, service, and cultural immersion in a well-organized, expertly-led environment.
