About Volunteer Program Program
INTERNeX's Volunteer Program offers you the chance to make a meaningful impact while gaining invaluable international experience. You'll choose from three distinct volunteer paths: domestic animal protection, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, or ecology and environmental conservation in beautiful local parks. Each placement is carefully matched to your interests and skills, allowing you to contribute to real conservation work while immersing yourself in local culture and improving your English abilities.
If you choose animal care, you'll have the option to work with either wildlife or domestic animals, each offering a different experience. Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation focuses on injured or orphaned animals with the goal of releasing them back into the wild—work that is deeply meaningful but requires patience, as direct animal contact may be limited. Domestic animal placements offer more hands-on interaction with furry companions like dogs, cats, bunnies, and guinea pigs that thrive on human connection. Keep in mind that wildlife centers receive primarily birds (70% of cases), while domestic facilities care for terrestrial animals. At wildlife stations, you'll undertake substantial maintenance work: cleaning enclosures, preparing species-appropriate food, maintaining facilities, and supporting sanctuary operations when available. This is physically demanding work that requires emotional resilience, as you may witness animals that cannot be saved and need to be euthanized—a sobering but important reality of conservation work.
The environmental conservation and education track appeals to those passionate about ecosystems and public engagement. You'll contribute to invasive species removal, lead educational programs about local wildlife and plants, and possibly work with school children in day-camp settings. Strong English skills are essential for these roles, as much of the work involves communication and teaching. All volunteer stations are strategically located in rural areas near cities, giving you access to both authentic local experiences and urban amenities.
This is not a casual holiday program—volunteering can be exhausting and demands physical fitness, genuine love for animals or the environment, and willingness to get dirty with outdoor work. However, the rewards are profound. INTERNeX supports you throughout with a pre-placement Skype call to understand your goals, careful job placement, in-person orientation, ongoing supervisor support, access to the INTERNeX community and social events, and 24-hour emergency assistance. You'll work with a range of organizations from small non-profits to large NGOs and governmental bodies, ensuring quality placements with mission-driven teams.
To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old, physically fit and healthy, possess a clean criminal record, maintain current travel insurance, have tetanus vaccination, and demonstrate genuine respect for animals and the environment.
